HPC AI Systems Administrator Intern

This role has been designed as 'Hybrid' with a requirement that you will work on average 2 days per week from an HPE office.

What you'd do

  • Assist with inventory validation for HPC and AI lab systems.
  • Review monitoring, logging, and vulnerability scanning coverage across a heterogeneous system fleet.
  • Identify gaps in agent deployment, log forwarding, scan inclusion, and system ownership records.
  • Build scripts, reports, or dashboards that summarize security visibility.
  • Document hardening expectations and practical checklists for lab systems.
  • Work with system administrators to validate findings and prioritize follow-up work.
  • Present project results and recommendations at the end of the internship.
  • How HPC and AI lab systems are operated in a real engineering environment.
  • How infrastructure teams track security coverage across heterogeneous systems.
  • Practical monitoring, logging, and vulnerability management workflows.

What they want

  • Linux is the working environment for this role, not a nice-to-have. We are looking for a candidate who is already comfortable operating without a graphical interface.
  • Currently enrolled in a degree program in cybersecurity, computer science, software engineering, information systems, computer engineering, network administration, or a related technical field.
  • Working comfort on the Linux command line.
  • Able to navigate a filesystem, read and edit configuration files, inspect running services and logs, manage users and permissions, and troubleshoot without a GUI.
  • Demonstrated hands-on Linux exposure through at least one of the following: a Linux or Unix systems administration course, a personal or home lab Linux environment, a prior internship or job with Linux responsibilities, or substantive coursework in a Linux-based environment.
  • Interest in cybersecurity, infrastructure, monitoring, or automation.
  • Ability to organize technical findings clearly in writing.
  • Willingness to learn from experienced administrators and ask questions early.
  • Able to work fully onsite in Chippewa Falls, WI for the duration of the internship.
